Sound Damage: A Deep Dive into Etiologies, Diagnoses, and Treatment of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

Noise over-exposure is the most common preventable cause of hearing loss, and the one Hearing Healthcare professionals encounter most often in clinical practice. This year's Palm Springs Hearing Seminars turns the full program toward noise-induced injury, tracing it from the molecular and cellular events inside the cochlea to the patient sitting across from you in the booth. Over two days at the DoubleTree Resort Palm Springs by Hilton, or faculty will present the basic and translational science of sound damage, the clinical spectrum of presentations including temporary threshold shifts, cochlear synaptopathy, and blast wave injuries, the co-morbidities that travel alongside NIHL including Hidden Hearing Loss and Tinntius/hyperacusis, and current evidence-based treatments of both hearing loss and tinnitus. There will also be a dedicated session on expanding your practice to include VA Compensation and Pension evaluations, offering a practical roadmap for clinicians considering this growing service line.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this two-day seminar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the underlying molecular, cellular, and synaptic mechanisms of noise-induced cochlear injury, including the pathophysiology of temporary threshold shifts, cochlear synaptopathy, and blast wave trauma, and explain how each mechanism informs clinical presentation.

  2. Differentiate among the clinical presentations and etiologies of noise-induced hearing loss across diverse patient populations, and identify common co-morbid conditions that influence diagnostic interpretation and patient management.

  3. Apply current evidence-based treatment strategies for noise-induced hearing loss and associated tinnitus, and outline the clinical and administrative requirements for incorporating VA Compensation and Pension audiology evaluations into a private practice.

The Agenda is currently being finalized. Check back for details to come!

We hope to see you in Palm Springs this December!

November 2018

“I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to present our work on hearing-aid self-adjustment and noise tolerance. An added bonus was the chance to learn from the other presenters. I was impressed by the seminar’s ability to persuade outstanding professionals to make the trip to the desert.”

Alex Boothroyd, 2017 Presenter
